Speaking With Grandfather

2-10-95

Grandfather, I asked you for strength
to help me endure the anguish.
I asked you to lend me courage
to face the future and move forward.

Grandfather, I asked you for strength
These things you have given me,
and I am grateful you saved my life.
I burned the sacred sage, and smudged, to purify
then built a medicine shield for protection.

Grandfather, I asked you for wisdom -
a vision, or some sign to show me
the path from the recent past
to the hope and promise of the future.

Grandfather, I asked you for strength
I see your hawks, but cannot understand their message.
They were forced to move, their home destroyed.
Now, I’m homeless in a hostile world.
Am I to move and rebuild, also?

Grandfather, I asked you for guidance
to pull me from the painful present,
and help me heal the wounds of the recent past -
you brought me memories from distant days.

I cannot hear the call of the future
as clear as I once did.
It has become clouded by the mists
of the near and forgotten past.

I am a warrior, Great Spirit,
but had thought my calling
was to teach your lessons
to a reawakened people.

Grandfather, I asked for direction
to guide me in the days ahead.
I do not fear my destiny, Father,
whether it brings death, or peace.

I know you will direct me, Grandfather,
toward the path you have chosen.
